Win vindication of

our policies: CM

Chandigarh, December 18-Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh has hailed the poll results as “a clear vindication of the Congress policies and a resounding defeat of the Opposition’s deceitful propaganda”. He congratulated the people for not succumbing to the pressure tactics of the Opposition, which “has tried hard to derail the free and democratic poll process with its cheap gimmickry and provocative acts”.
He alleged that the SAD-BJP combine, faced with an imminent defeat, had stooped to historic lows in a desperate bid to win the elections. “The Opposition had used all possible tactics – from open threats to misleading statements and rumour mongering to intimidate the voters — but failed miserably.
Citing the high voter turnout, the CM said the people of Punjab had once again shown political maturity and courage. They had not forgotten what the Akalis had done for 10 years and had responded by voting them out of power in the Assembly elections and now again handing them a crushing defeat, he said.
He came down heavily on the “feudal Akali practice of holding sangat darshans that kept development out of the state”. As far as AAP was concerned, it had come to Punjab like a summer storm but had been completely decimated, he added.

Khaira fears EVMs

will be manipulated

Jalandhar, December 16- Sukhpal Singh Khaira, AAP MLA and Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, today expressed fears over the manipulation of EVMs in the MC elections.
Addressing a rally till 5 pm today in the Garha locality here, Khaira violated the code of conduct by overshooting the campaigning deadline of 4 pm.
Khaira said, “There are all chances of the manipulation of machines during the elections if there is no VVPAT for the EVMs. During the UP elections, many discrepancies came to the fore. While people voted for A party, the votes went to the B party. The Election Commission must take corrective measures.”
On the SAD’s foundation day celebrations, Khaira said, “Whenever the Akali Dal is out of power, it remembers Panthic issues. Their leaders then rake up issues like Chandigarh’s inclusion in Punjab and call for a federal structure.”
‘Violates’ poll code
Khaira continued addressing a gathering till 5 pm on Friday despite time for campaigning ending at 4 pm. When asked, Khaira said, “I didn’t know that the deadline was till 4 pm. I thought it was 5 pm. The deadline is usually 5 pm, as also in Assembly elections.”
Jalandhar DC Varinder Sharma said, “The issue has been brought to my notice an hour back and we are initiating an inquiry into the issue. If any violation comes to the fore, then we will be initiating requisite action.”

Sec 307 against Akalis stands: Jakhar

Jalandhar, December 11- State Congress president Sunil Jakhar today said the cases registered against SAD leaders under Section 307 (attempt to murder)of the IPC and for holding dharna and disrupting traffic on the national highway still stand and won’t be withdrawn.
In response to the former Deputy CM Sukhbir Badal’s dare to the Punjab Government to arrest him and the other Akali leaders, Jakhar said, “Due process of law will be followed in the cases.”
Questioned on the Ferozepur DIG’s claim that the cases filed under Section 307 would be cancelled, Jakhar said, “That cannot be done, it is wrong.  The CM has marked an inquiry to the crime department on the issue. There is very strong evidence and videos of the action. Hundreds of people were inconvenienced, traffic disrupted and police officials threatened. Sukhbir Badal has been the Deputy Chief Minister and the Home Minister. He knows such cases aren’t just cancelled.”
The state Congress chief was addressing a press conference and was accompanied by Local Bodies Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu. MLAs Pargat Singh, Rajinder Beri and Sukhwinder Singh Randhawa were also present.
Sidhu said, “It is my personal appeal to the CM that the guilty be punished. Any police official unduly pardoning the guilty is liable to be punished.”
Jakhar equated the incident with the Behbal Kalan firing which took place during the Akali government’s tenure. “Apna pichokar jhaak ke dekho (look into your own past). Then, the so-called panthic government had even included carrying of ‘kirpans’ as an offence punishable under the Arms Act.”
He said, “Sukhbir Badal has forgotten the exigencies committed during his own time and merely raking up the issue since certain well-heeled Akalis had cases against them. He should formally apologise. The ‘kamau putt’of the Akalis — those with serious charges like mining and selling of ‘chitta’ — are being shielded with this dharna.”

Will form force to check

Cong ‘repression’: SAD

Chandigarh, December 11- Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal today declared that his party “fully accepts the challenge of a repressive Congress government on the denial of democratic rights for raising our voice in favour of the beleaguered Punjabis who are feeling cheated by it”.
Talking to mediapersons after a meeting of the SAD Core Committee, Sukhbir alleged: “The government is trying to suppress democratic opposition and distract attention from their betrayal of the Punjabis on tall promises made to them. I dare this government to arrest me instead of acting against ordinary Akali workers.”
Sukhbir said the party would set up a “Force for Democracy” with a minimum of 10 volunteers from every village, a total of 1,20,000 workers in the state, who would work  as vigilantes against the Congress repression.
On inconvenience to commuters during the Akali dharnas, Sukhbir said: “I sincerely apologise to students, women, children or sick and elderly people who had to face inconvenience. But I also request them to understand that the dharnas were not about Akalis but the rights of the common man to elect civic bodies of their own choice for the development in their areas. How can the people elect representatives if the Congress was denying others a chance to contest?” he said.
Earlier, a resolution passed at the meeting, chaired by former CM Parkash Singh Badal, congratulated the party president on the “success” of the dharnas and for “delivering a setback to the Congress government”.
Sukhbir issued a warning to the officers “who have discarded their uniform to earn Congress loyalty. I warn these officials to mend their ways. We are keeping a close watch on each of them.”

MLA: Unaware of pic at police station

sangrur, December 7- AICC spokesman and Sangrur Congress MLA Vijay Inder Singla, whose portrait installation with that of CM Capt Amarinder Singh in Sangrur police stations has triggered a controversy, said neither had anyone sought his consent nor had any youth leader spoken to him over the issue before placing his pictures in police stations. Fuming at his party workers, he has reportedly asked them to follow the protocol rather than indulging in such publicity tactics.
“I was not even aware that any worker wanted to put up my picture in police station. I don’t believe in such things. No one even called me to get my consent before going to any police station. There is a set protocol and none has any right to violate it. I will come back to Sangrur after three days and get details of the incident as currently, I am busy in Gujarat campaigning,” Singla told The Tribune.
Poonam Kangra, general sectary of the Youth Congress, who led youth leaders to “put up” the portraits, said, “We did not take the consent of Sangrur MLA Vijay Inder Singla for it as there was no need of any permission. It’s a set procedure.”
Meanwhile, the police say they had not allowed any installation of portraits.
