Delhi Police crack Lajpat Nagar

heist case, detain 6 people

New Delhi, January 31 - The daring daylight armed heist of around Rs. 8 crore in Lajpat Nagar has been cracked by the Delhi Police, a senior police officer confirmed on Friday.
As many as six persons including those related to Rajesh Kalra and Rakesh Kumar Sharma, the two businessmen who lost around Rs. 8 cr in Tuesday's heist, have reportedly been detained by the police.
A senior police officer confirmed that the case has been cracked but said that it will be officially announced only after the recovery of the money and the vehicles used in the offence.
Raids are being conducted in different parts of Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. Police are hopeful that they will recover the money by evening. More than 12 teams of the Delhi Police are conducting the raids and looking for other accused involved in the heist.
According to the senior officer, the detained persons, some of who are related to either of the two business partners, who had been assisting the investigators in their probe for the last three days.
"They constantly misled us by providing false information about the case. However, we established their involvement by collecting evidence against them and confronted them with the same after which they broke down and confessed their involvement in the crime," added the senior officer.
Sharma, 32-year-old diamond merchant, along with his three employees and one staff of his business partner Kalra were heading towards Karol Bagh in his Honda City car when six robbers waylaid them and made away with his car with around Rs. 8 cr on gun point.
The heist took place at around 9.30am on Tuesday some 100 meters away from the Lajpat Nagar metro station.
The robbers were in two stolen cars - a Wagon R and a Verna sedan - which they abandoned between a distance of about 2 km on the passageway. Sharma's Honda City was also found abandoned near Sewa Nagar Railway Crossing with two empty bags inside.
Police investigation revealed that the robbed money was part of an alleged Hawala racket of which Kalra reportedly is an alleged active operator.
Kalra is an alleged south Delhi-based bookie, who was arrested in the infamous cricket match fixing scandal of 2000 involving former captain of the South African cricket team late Hansie Cronje.
HT has already reported that Kalra has connections with some high-profile bookies in India and he is a very close friend of Bollywood actor Vindoo Randhawa, son of late wrestler and actor Dara Singh, who was arrested by the Mumbai Crime Branch last year for his alleged involvement in betting pertaining to IPL matches.
Delhi Police's special cell had busted IPL spot fixing scandal last year which was probed further by the Mumbai Police.
